DataDot™ Frequently Asked Questions

How do DataDots™ work?

DataDots™ are a state of the art identification and anti-theft security system applicable to most assets. The product consists of polyester substrate micro-dots, each the size of a grain of sand, onto which unique information is laser etched. These unique dots come pre-mixed in a UV based adhesive for ready application onto assets such as laptops, stereos, mp3 players, business assets, cell phones, tools, electronics, and other high value items. Police need only to locate a single DataDot™ to confirm the asset's true identity. Simple 30x magnification is all that is needed to read a DataDot™ containing multiple lines of a police-traceable code. Each code is unique and cannot be manufactured again.

In essence, DataDots™ are "DNA for your Property."

Can I customize my own Dot?

Yes. DataDot Technology USA offers an option to customize dots. Any alpha-numeric combination up to a maximum of 25 characters can be laser etched onto dot kits. In addition to the custom information, a unique PIN will also be added. As with all DataDot™ Kits, registration is required to assist with police identification services. An additional fee is charged for customization.

How can DataDots™ be detected?

Warning decals are supplied with DataDot™ Kits for application to marked assets.

In addition, DataDots™ come in an adhesive with a UV trace. As police examine assets with a blacklight, the adhesive on marked assets will illuminate indicating the presence of DataDots™.

If the DataDot™ location can be detected by black light, wouldn't it be possible for thieves to find the dots and remove them?

It is advised that DataDots™ be applied to valuables in both visible and hidden locations. In addition, it is suggested that at least five DataDots™ be applied to each valuable and that a number of "false" glue marks that do not contain DataDots™ be made as well. Correctly following the application instructions will make it very difficult and time consuming for thieves to detect and remove all of the DataDots™ on an item.

How are DataDots™ read?

DataDots™ are read using a minimum 30x magnifying scope. Scopes are available for purchase from AIS or from other retailers.

What kind of adhesive is used to attach the DataDots™ to the surface of the identified item?

DataDots™ are suspended in a water-soluble ultra-violet light sensitive adhesive that becomes tack free in approximately 30 minutes and fully cured in 24 hours. Once the adhesive is cured, it is clear and water resistant.

What if I spill the dots or apply the dot to the wrong spot?

As a water based adhesive, DataDots™ may be simply wiped off with a damp cloth for the first 30 minutes after application or spillage. Please read the application instructions provided with each kit for correct application.

What if I need more DataDots™?

Additional DataDot™ kits can be ordered directly from AIS either online or via phone. New DataDot™ numbers will be different from the your initial number, however, the system supports the registration of multiple DataDot™ numbers to a single user.

How do I register my kit?

To register your kit you need to have your unique DataDot™ PIN that was provided in the kit provided. Simply logon to www.datadotusa.com and select the Product Registration option and follow the instructions provided.

How long do the dots last?

Typically the dots will last around 20 years once applied.

Can I get an insurance discount when I implement the DataDot Identification system?

Contact your insurance agent to find out about whether or not your insurance company offers discounts for customers that make the effort to mark their valuables for easier identification.

If I implement DataDot™ Technology, do I still need an alarm system?

Measured results from DataDot™ Identification programs indicate that more than 80% of the time thieves move on after realizing that a vehicle, or property and contents are identified by DataDots™. While the DataDot™ system has been proven to deter thieves without the ongoing expense of an alarm contract, it can't prevent a robbery to the extent of a professionally installed alarm system. Therefore, the best way to protect your family and valuables is to implement both systems.

Why should I bother to use DataDot™ DNA?

While everyone knows it's a good idea to take precautions against theft mostly it's one of those things we put off until tomorrow....and as we know tomorrow never comes! The truth is that theft is a fact of life and, even if we have insurance, the disruption and trauma of losing a car, the thought of a thief being in your home or having your business disrupted by loss of a computer or piece of equipment is a nightmare we can all live without. More worrying is the level of violence criminals are prepared to use nowadays in stealing. Car jacking is on the increase and wanton destruction of property seems to be the norm.

DataDot™ DNA brings peace of mind at a very modest cost.
